Megayacht Marina Making Movie Magic
Palmas Del Mar, Puerto Rico – For the second time in just over one month, The Yacht Club Palmas Del Mar was used as a backdrop for film crews capturing Puerto Rico for the big, and small screen. Lured by the tropical setting and some healthy tax breaks, film and TV producers are shooting more movies in Puerto Rico each year.
The Yacht Club Palmas Del Mar hosted and staged two of the islands most recent productions. The first was a Lifetime Networks production titled “One Hot Summer” which expects to air on the Cable TV Network sometime in the fall of 2009. The second filming, just competed, was an Italian series “Angels and Diamonds” – which is best described as an Italian version of “Charlie’s Angels.”
“I would say that the “Angels and Diamonds” production attracted the most amount of attention from the Palmas Del Mar community. We had a 77 foot yacht anchored just off our break wall, and there were Jet Ski’s circling around and fake gun shots coming from the bow, it was quite a scene,” said Tim Keogh, The Yacht Club’s General Manager.
The filming represents a huge economic impact for the entire island and one series can provide as many as 200 jobs for local labor and talent. In addition, it gave the marina customers and visitors something new to participate in and watch. The film producers selected several of The Yacht Clubs customers’ boats for use in the filming; including a 77-foot Symbol and several smaller tenders and center consoles.
The warm weather, beautiful scenery all help to attract these movies; but most significantly is a 40% tax credit, which is offered by the Puerto Rican Government to lure these film crews to the island. It is one of the highest incentives offered by any island in the Caribbean.
The most recent big screen production filmed entirely on the Island was “The Rum Diary” staring Johnny Depp based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel, and prior to that “A Perfect Getaway” which is in theatres now.
